Introduction

The story of Nehemiah has an archetypal quality to it. The Persian Empire allowed the exiles of Israel to return to Jerusalem, rebuild the temple and the wall. Persia saw that if they were going to maintain their power as this empire that continued to expand through conquering, then what harm is it in allowing them to worship their God?
