In Hesiod's day, standard versions of myths and legends had not yet been consecrated by institutions. While a certain degree of orthodoxy was expected, entertainment value was equally important. It's useful to think of his theogony as symptomatic of a greater pattern of slowly consolidating cultural traditions.
