When I turned up for my first interview at Goldman Sachs in 1992, I didn't actually know who Goldman Sachs were. They were looking for somebody that's some sort of mathematical background and computer programming is also important to me. And so I was a reasonably good computer programmer, I had a background in quote and the government very kindly took a punt on me. But it's sort of useless being a mathematician being a statistician without being able to computer program or that being able to program a computer rather because it's like being a novelist who can't write your views or express your ideas through programming computers.
