In 1938, he went on the radio to defend Kristallnacht as having been a necessary reprisal against that international conspiracy of bankers. I'm not suggesting in any way that Roth's vision of an anti-Semitic America is a kind of importation from Europe. On the contrary, he's talking about what those American forces and voices would have created. The book would have been even better had he thought through the ways in which African-American racism would surely take part in any American fascism.
