The Bottom Up Emergence

This is Varela's notion of an autopoetic system. This means that we are starting to get something like a vertical dimension back to our ontology, but the idea of emergence through complexification of things like biology. Now I want to come back later towards the end of the series and talk about this bottom up emergence, and does it need to be complemented by a metaphysical idea of a top-down emanation?
