Grim was looking at the way in which sounds, especially consonants, changed over time within the indo european languages. He concluded that there were indeed specific sound differences in words found in the germanic and non germanic languages. But more importantly, he discovered that these sound differences were part of a systematic change after they had become separated from the other Indo-European groups.
