The Battle of Stamford Bridge
The english opened up with skirmishing tactics. A smaller force of warriors were sent in on horseback to circle around the norse lines and harry them. Eventually, king godwinson's fholl army would have locked their shields and engaged the norse. Fought warrior to warrior, conscript to conscript, viking to huscar all wilthe norts held their lines and desperately clung to their shields. We don't have a moment by moment record of this battle, but we know that it was long, extraordinarily long for its time. It involved perhaps as many as 20 thousand men, all on a hot day.
