Can we even think of individual objects as being separate from each other if ultimately everything is a manifestation of a single field? Well, I think this is a slightly tricky question because we come to it with pre-existing baggage about what it means for things to be separate or connected from our everyday life. When we talk about fundamental physics or the ultimate nature of reality, that intuition is going to fail us. It's just not going to quite count.
Welcome to the November 2022 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number — based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good — and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!
