Every month on the 30th of the month, which is the night of no moon and a lunar calendar, you had to summon your ancestors by calling them by name. If there was no one to call your name every month, you ceased to be in the afterlife. That's why Abraham and Sarah were so distressed and not having a direct familial descendant. It's because they didn't have this understanding of the afterlife that we do.
