The Backstory of the Nation of Israel
Moses included this story in Genesis because he wanted us to know it, says Sam Woodruff. He thinks Moses sets up problems that then are resolved in subsequent stories. This passage is setting up the problem that's going to be resolved in the next story,. So what we're seeing here is that Jacob's children are violent men. They are unrighteous men. And this violence risks tearing the family apart.
