I Don't Speak Urdu, Just Can't Talk English

I arrived in California, fluent in Urdu and Punjabi, but not speaking a word of English. I was surrounded by kids from all over the world who had come on the Stanford campus because it was really quite incredible in the 1970s. It felt like you had sort of shrunk the UN General Assembly down to a bunch of five-year-olds and put them barefoot onto this campus. And my mother and father told me that after that I didn't really speak for a month. They were quite concerned. A month later when I next spoke, I was speaking in English in complete sentences with an American accent.
