The Subfield of China Western Coordination on AI Safety and Governance
There are likely to be only a few hundred full-time technical AI safety researchers worldwide. The pool of those working in AI governance is likely to be broader, since it encompasses both policy practitioners and researchers. Gaining and leveraging expertise on China is a promising option in general. But we are still highly uncertain about the overall tractability of increasing coordination to reduce AI risk.
