Cynicism and Hellenistic Philosophy
Cynicism passed from Greek into Roman society and survived well into the imperial age. Cicero found their shameful behavior appalling, but Epictetus, Seneca, and other Stoics offered the cynics at least grudging respect. The Epicureans had a far more socially acceptable lifestyle,. yet few representatives of other schools showed anything but scorn for them because they were hedonists.
