There are things like a Chitte powder from Central America or Mexico that probably don't have a strong smell but are used in cooking. I could see in the south of France this vendor trying to sell a spice that's nowhere near as expensive as saffron, but yet will give the color that you might want in some kind of dishes. The trouble is because you haven't tasted it, we don't really have a point of reference,. But I was going to also recommend a natto seeds ground up. That's an interesting idea. Because they're used, for example, orange cheddar cheese gets its color from a natto Seeds.
