Researchers injected a virus into the insular cortex of mice. When neurons are activated, they express a set of genes called immediate early genes or C-FOS. The researchers then used fluorescent markers to tag cells that were active during this inflammation. They could later manipulate their activity to see whether it re-induced the same immune phenotype in the gut.
