Mass is part of how we tell which particle is which. Some particles adhere to a very impressive diet. Photons have no mass while top quarks, the heaviest known fundamental particle, have the mass of like 175 protons. Because their mass is so weird and so hard to nail down, it's not something we actually know very well.
