Eight of the 15 worst abusers of press freedom are in the Middle East. In Algeria, for instance, there's really not much of an independent press left. Some regimes buy up advertising agencies to deprive critical outlets of revenue. Others have brought in laws which ban certain types of news. And in some cases, the government simply shuts down entities and outlets entirely.
