Many of the books within this space just aren't scientifically based and probably classified as pseudoscience more than anything. Studies show that people who read self-help books actually have higher levels of stress hormones and are more likely to have depressive symptoms. The best approach is talking to a professional that can give you one-on-one advice, not generic fluffy words sold to millions. One writer on Medium, Mason Sabur said that he bought a book on quitting smoking purely because it was hailed as a miracle book.
