The incentive structure, the mechanisms, have moved so that now general elections are only a threat to a handful of politicians. When there isn't an incentive to tell these people to shut the hell up at the level of national perceptions, that's what the party becomes. And i think it's really unfair, because i know they're a lot of what i always call closet normals in the republican party who don't like any of this stuff,. They're just not willing to say so.
