The soul is the thing that makes your body alive. Every living thing, whether it's plant, animal, fungus, whatever it is, it's got a soul. But these pre-human ancestors would not have had a human soul. It would have a Homo erectus soul. And the boundary line between full modern humanity and what immediately preceded it might be a pretty small one.
