The Fairness Doctrine was part of why most Americans lived in a semi-unified media ecosystem back in, prior to 1987. In 1987, the FCC, as the result of a court case, the FCC rejected the Fairness Doctrine. Conservatives cheered this on because fair media was seen by arch conservatives as a big reason why Americans had broadly supported the impeachment of Richard Nixon at the end of the Watergate investigation. After about a decade or so of fighting, they're able to get it killed.
