In true IWW fashion, if bosses didn't do what the workers wanted, the union would respond by taking direct action on the job. They'd wait a few hours into the shift and then in the middle of a shift without announcing to the boss, they would basically put some cargo in swings and pull up the ropes. And well, the boss is sort of faced with a situation. You either listen to the workers and get your work done or you're stuck, right? In the industry of shipping where time is money, that's a very powerful tactic, right?
