The song Jeremy is based on a true story about a kid who shot himself in front of his like school mates and his name really was Jeremy. "We're no longer doing fun pop music We are now doing miserable depressed Messy sounding muddy sounding trash," says singer Eddie Vedder. Pearl Jam paved the way for new metal, he adds.
