When counties in America receive low-skilled immigrants on average, the vote share for the Republican Party goes up. And when they receive high-skilled immigrants, the voteshare for the Democratic Party goes down. Many of the states that ended up going for Trump in the 2016 election were states where the share of low-skilled migrants had increased and according to our paper, did increasing lead to higher voting shares for the GOP.
Title 42 is expiring on Thursday night, a pandemic-era rule allowing the U.S. government to turn away asylum seekers at the border as a public health measure. This comes at a time when apprehensions at the border are already at record highs and Americans give President Biden some of his lowest ratings on his handling of immigration.
