I want to paint a illustrative example of where something could go wrong in this AI-dumerism as framed to me by one of my friends. And I would love for you to push back on where you think it breaks down or say, yeah, it's possible, but I don't think it's likely. So the example that I was given was you start with a chatbot and we can call it GPT-4 or GPT-29 or whatever it is. The script then starts doing all kinds of operations that the human didn't intend, but that makes sense to the AI. It starts copying itself to a bunch of different web servers, putting a bunch of websites

Robin Hanson is an associate professor of economics at George Mason. He is known for a number of his works including Prediction Markets and Futarchy, writings on the possibility of alien life with both the Great Filter and Grabby Aliens, his book The Elephant In The Brain about our social programming, as well as extensive work and thought in the field of artificial intelligence including a very prescient series of debates and writings with Eliezer Yudkowsky 15 years ago.
