How Does Hype Affect Progress in Science Experiments?

A lot of science experiment categories are blooming simultaneously, often in concert with each other. The Y-axis on the Gartner hype cycle is visibility, not progress; since social experiments products need users for them to have any actual value, there's a direct correlation between the two.
