Nicholas Black Elk was close to his mother's father, a beloved grandfather who gave him a bow and arrows. Boys aspired to being a warrior since dying in battle was the greatest thing an Indian could do. Despite times of rugged play, Black Elk's childhood had its lighter moments. Pranks also had their place.
