People with low self-esteem may have periods where they seem to be okay. They will also be prone to periods of anxiety and depression, as can people with clinical perfectionism. The key issue is that you set up a positive feedback loop within your emotional system. So for instance, if you're ruminating about all the bad things have happened, you'd stop doing that or maybe think, well, good things have happened.
