Hip Pain
The classical deformity that you will see is of course the shortening and external rotation of the affected hip. This is a fairly good clinical sign but you need to be aware that it might not be present in about 15% of cases. So particularly those with what are called impacted neck of femur fractures. Now if you are seeing a patient with a shortened and internally rotated hip, then it is far more likely to be a hip dislocation. I use exactly the same method I would use in terms of my clinical assessment for any other injury and that is just simply that look feel move approach.
