Benson tried to run for president in 1960, but the church didn't want him. So they created a front group that was manned by birchers and used it to recruit Benson as vice president of the German Burt Society. They also targeted Strom Thurman, who had given the longest filibuster in U.S. history against civil rights movement. If this is just political expediency or if Romney believes he's actually supporting civil rights, then there may be another issue at play.
