Soviets were just really, really good at having an ideology that appealed to a lot of people in the us. And somebody like nancy germany or japan, did not. But part of it is just where f d r sympathies lies. I mean, i think some of it was his affluent background, is a little bit of a sense of nobleas oblige. It was roosevelt who had first recognized the soviet union in november 19 33. The coolers under hardiigean and even hoovering administrations hadn't yet recognized the so viet union. One could certainly imagine with a different type of president in the white house
