How to Spell a Word Correctly
If a word ends with an E, we usually need to drop it before adding the suffix. This rule would apply when you're adding the suffix, E, S, T, to the word silly and getting silliest. Having knowledge of these spelling rules is going to help students both with recognizing suffixes and the base or root words. It also really helps them when correctly using the word with suffixes in their own writing so they know how to spell it.
