The Science of Friction

Friction comes from the gripping of molecules on one surface to the molecules on the other. If you want to move two objects relative to one another, we say shearing them or moving them laterally, then you need to allow those molecules to ungrip or release and then move past the other one. And that requires a sort of input of energy even at the molecular level. So much for the theory, but back in Sterling at the curling rink, I'm still struggling to put my basic understanding of tribology into practice.
