The Cross Is a Symbol of Death
The cross is an ancient, brutal, grotesque, ignoble symbol of death. The call of je us to deny ourselvs and to take up our cross is essentially a call to come and die. In this city and in the world we call home, this just sounds crazy. Everything is about self fulfilment, not self denial. And yet, in this sombre moment, it's actually a brilliant insight into the way that satan gets into our life. It is through our refusal to go to the cross.
