Churchill and the First Meeting With the War Cabinet
Churchill became Prime Minister on the same day that Hitler began his attack westwards to take Belgium and then France. He gets a call, or Halifax does, from Mussolini, who's not in the war yet. And he says he wants to host a peace conference; things are going real bad. Historians think it was a mistake not to respond to this. If Chamberlain and Halifax were to resign from the war cabinet, it's not unlikely that Churchill's government would have fallen.
