How Long Does It Take to Plant a Quasi Natural Forest?
Trees may not necessarily compete for sunlight, but because of the competition around them, they shoot up more directly instead of wasting energy with things like lateral branching. He argues in his paper that these quasi natural forests can be formed in Japan and as little as 15 years and 40 years in tropical places. The density is really crucial here and super important and not just making the trees grow taller but also crowding out invasives. On one site that he worked on in Malaysia, they compared tree growth between a regular reforestation site and a Mayawaki site. It was about a 550% increase in height.
