Foucault's the Order of Things
In Foucault's book The Order of Things, he asks what is an author. He was responding to criticisms of his use of disparate thinkers like Marx and Linnaeus. In doing so, he's sort of reimagining the question or the point that Balth put forward. And we don't really search for such origins when we're confronted with a text because we are not there with a laundry list or shopping list.
