Introduction
To day's lecture is, in a certain sense, the opposite of yesterday's. Our previous discussion utilized the methodology of interpretation that we are attempting to pioneer for a vote. To day, we will focus largely on one individual in a vote, and mostly on only a few lines of rhetoric from this one individual. If, as we have argued, a tractate avote is simultaneously celebrated and misunderstood, then of all the rabbis in a vote,. the most celebrated, but also the most misunderstood, is hilel.
