The Importance of Music in Hong Kong

Hong Kar-Y was born in Shanghai, but when he was five his family moved to the British colony of Hong Kong. He grew up on a street where there were lots of music stores, partly because a lot of sailors went there from various places. So he grew up listening to things like Xavier Kugat and Johnny Mathis, and then Chinese songs with Cantonese and Mandarin. I've always thought that maybe shaped his sense of life a little bit because almost all of his movies are musicals in a way.
