The zero knowledge proof is an end, like there's a sort of result that allows you to decipher that this activity has happened without any other information. After Zcash got launched, yeah, definitely saw an uptick in people claiming to do zero knowledge stuff. But even before then, I remember seeing hackpads and various login systems that claim to have zero knowledge.
