In the first three movies, we see two kinds of beings. We see squids, which are drones. But then we see computer programmes in the matrix - such as ramacondra who bade a child sati like t that is going on in the sequels. And also, there are programmes like the merovingian and the exiles, who have fully pieced out the matrix. They have to live in the matrix, but they live, you know, outside of its walls.
