Chimneys can be meters tall, sometimes tens of meters tall. Depending on the minerals it's made of, a chimney can be black or white or green or red and its inside is hollow. The mix of minerals and chemicals in these pores could have potentially led to all kinds of different combinations. Each theoretical story is a set of basic assumptions about an environment that a researcher like Lori or Anna can work from.
How did life on Earth start? To help answer that, researchers are trying to create some life for themselves.
