By the mid 1960s India's burgeoning population was becoming a problem. Both national and state governments began pushing contraception programs. Although abortion was still illegal, authorities often turned a blind eye to that common practice too. Mother Teresa set up an orphanage and local children like Mari were recruited to help out. She says: "It was quite overwhelming to walk into this little like dormitories"
