The Sliding of Smell
The Sliding of Smell is a paper by Bill Lykin that says philosophers need to pay more attention to smell. The author argues smells exist in different ways than normal objects and we can inhabit the smell, but at the same time it doesn't present itself as being at a place. So what is it about the plume itself or the odorous cloud that gives you the cookie smell? And so what I argue is this is where matter comes in. It's something about matter that generates smells; whether or not our mind imposes upon matter, which makes us then transduce ourselves into smelling certain things isn't known.
