The boat jolted beneath me. Something dark appeared beyond the tree trunks. It was moving, a shadow independent of the shifting needles and swaying branches. A shape, a being, taller than a man, and deliberate in its movements. I fired more than once, but there was no reaction. The sound was lost among all the others. There is always one survivor, always someone spare.
