Pop Culture Japan Is a Political and Confronted Figure
The nostalgia for what has been lost from quote unquote traditional Japan is no doubt a dominant narrative in Japan still today. But the figure of pop culture Japan as I saw emerging among state bureaucrats primarily makes a bit of a break with that nostalgia, an important historical break and turns that past oriented sense of nostalgia or nostalgia loss into a hope for what is to come in the future. This new Japan very much grounded in its innovative and creative popular culture and its popular culture industries.
