Chiyu Shuh: Hong Kong and Taiwan are perhaps the only columns in the world when the colonial powers left. Local population could not take over any established or regime, she says. So they rely on "colonial modernity" to regain their self-respect; that's how they feel superior to Chinese people. In other parts of the world, colonies re-establish their regime and then reconnect relationship with formal colonial powers. But in Hong Kong, Taiwan, there was no such rule for local people to feel being respected by the regime who took over.
