Is Causation Metaphysical?

The causal principle is based upon the fundamental metaphysical principle that something cannot come into being from nothing. This is a principle as old as philosophy itself, goes all the way back to parminities and I think is eminently reasonable. There's nothing about nothingness that could make universes be preferred to everything else. And admitting that anything and everything can pop into being uncaused from nothing would destroy the whole project of modern science.
