The Energy and Material Footprints for Making Digital Devices
There's probably no industry that is more material intense and polluting, gram for gram, pound for pound. To get the purity of materials that you need to make things like semi conductors so that they will work properly requires a substantially more energy and material input in terms of purifying those materials. So there there are really, if you will, heavy consequences to manufacturing these devices.
