The Rise of Public Lighting in London
The introduction of public lighting in London takes place a little bit after other European cities, in fact, like Paris in the late 17th century. Charles Dickens used to walk an enormous number of miles between home and office at night. He has written about how he's missing the city when he's living in Lausanne but starts up again during the day. It seems as if they supplied something to my brain which cannot bear it when I'm so busy. Mr Hather: For a fortnight, I can write to proditiously in this place where I've retired... But that sets me off on another journey with these people who are trying to find their way back."
